1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the command of God our Savior and of the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,

2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia, you should stay on at Ephesus to instruct certain men not to teach false doctrines

4 or devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculation rather than the stewardship of God’s work, which is by faith.

5 The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.

6 Some have strayed from these ways and turned aside to empty talk.

7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or that which they so confidently assert.

8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately.

9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for killers of father or mother, for murderers,

10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching

11 that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, that He considered me faithful and appointed me to service.

13 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man; yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, I was shown mercy.

14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

16 But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Jesus Christ might display all His patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight,

19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith.

20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

2 Unto Timothy, [my] own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, [and] peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: [so do].

5 ¶ Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and [of] a good conscience, and [of] faith unfeigned:

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

8 But we know that the law [is] good, if a man use it lawfully;

9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

12 ¶ And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did [it] ignorantly in unbelief.

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

15 This [is] a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, [be] honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

18 ¶ This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

2 Timothy, my righteous son in faith. Grace, mercy, peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

3 As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, and commanded some that they should not teach otherwise,

4 Neither heed the fables, and the genealogies, which have no end, and bring up questions, more than correction to God in faith.

5 For the chief sum of the commandment is love from a pure heart, and from a good conscience, and from unfeigned faith,

6 Of whom some have erred, and turned aside unto vain babblings,

7 Want to be masters of the Scriptures, and do not understand what they say or what they set.

8 But we know that the law is good, if any man use it aright,

9 Knowing this, that no law is given to the righteous, but to the unrighteous and rebellious, to the wicked and sinners, to the unholy and unspiritual, to murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, to slayers,

10 The fornicators, the rapists, the thieves, the liars, the perjurers, and so forth contrary to sound doctrine:

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which is committed unto me.

12 And I thank our Lord JESUS Christ, which hath made me strong, and hath kept me faithful, and set me in the ministry,

13 Who before was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and a reproach. But mercy hath been shown me: for I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.

14 But the more abundant was the grace of our Lord, with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

15 For this is certainly true, and your precious word, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief.

16 But for this cause mercy was shewed me, that in me first of all Jesus Christ might shew all patience as an example unto them which should believe on him unto eternal life.

17 But to God, the eternal King, the incorruptible and invisible, and the only wise, be glory and honor forever and ever. Amen.

18 This commandment I command thee, my son Timotheus, according to the former prophecies concerning thee, that thou exercise good chivalry in the same.

19 And have faith and a good conscience, which some have cast off, and have been shipwrecked in the faith;

20 Among whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they should be chastened to blaspheme no more.
