Genesis 46

1 So Israel set out with all that he had, and when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

2 And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” He said. “Here I am,” replied Jacob.

3 “I am God,” He said, “the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.

4 I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”

5 Then Jacob departed from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their children and wives.

6 They also took the livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.

7 Jacob took with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons, and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.

8 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.

9 The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

10 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.

13 The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.

15 These are the sons of Leah born to Jacob in Paddan-aram, in addition to his daughter Dinah. The total number of sons and daughters was thirty-three.

16 The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.

17 The children of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.

18 These are the sons of Jacob born to Zilpah—whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

20 Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.

21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.

22 These are the sons of Rachel born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan: Hushim.

24 The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.

25 These are the sons of Jacob born to Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel—seven in all.

26 All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons.

27 And with the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family who went to Egypt were seventy in all.

28 Now Jacob had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When Jacob’s family arrived in the land of Goshen,

29 Joseph prepared his chariot and went there to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, embraced him, and wept profusely.

30 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”

31 Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of Canaan have come to me.

32 The men are shepherds; they raise livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and all that they own.’

33 When Pharaoh summons you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’

34 you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”

1 ¶ And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.

2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here [am] I.

3 And he said, I [am] God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:

4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up [again]: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

5 ¶ And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:

7 His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

8 And these [are] the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.

9 And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

10 And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.

11 And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

12 And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

15 These [be] the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters [were] thirty and three.

16 And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

17 And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.

18 These [are] the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, [even] sixteen souls.

19 The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin.

20 And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

21 And the sons of Benjamin [were] Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

22 These [are] the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls [were] fourteen.

23 And the sons of Dan; Hushim.

24 And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

25 These [are] the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls [were] seven.

26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls [were] threescore and six;

27 And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, [were] two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, [were] threescore and ten.

28 ¶ And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.

29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

30 And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou [art] yet alive.

31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which [were] in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;

32 And the men [are] shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.

33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What [is] your occupation?

34 That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, [and] also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd [is] an abomination unto the Egyptians.

1 And Israel went with all that he had. And when he was come to Beer-saba, he offered sacrifices unto the God of Isaac his father.

2 And God said unto him in the night in his vision, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.

3 And he said: I am GOD, the GOD of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt, for there will I make thee a great nation.

4 I will go down with thee into Egypt, and will bring thee up also: and Joseph shall put his hands upon thine eyes.

5 And Jacob arose from Beer-saba; and the children of Israel brought Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the chariots which Pharaoh had sent to bring him.

6 And they took their cattle and their substance, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his seed with him.

7 His children, and his children's children with him, his daughters, and his children's daughters, and all his seed, brought he with him into Egypt.

8 These are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt: Jacob and his sons. The firstborn of Jacob's son, Reuben.

9 the children of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu Hezron and Charmi.

10 The sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Saul the son of the Canaanitish woman.

11 the children of Levi: Gerson, Kahath, and Meran.

12 The sons of Judah; Ger, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah. And Ger and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez; Hezron, and Hamul.

13 the children of Issachar: Thola, Phua, Job and Simron.

14 And the sons of Zebulun; Zered, and Elon, and Jahleel.

15 These are the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Mesopotamia, with Dinah his daughter: all these, sons and daughters, make thirty and three souls.

16 the children of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Suni, Ezbon, Eri, Modi and Areli.

17 And the sons of Asher; Jemnah, and Jesua, and Jesui, and Briah, and Serah their sister. But the children of Briah: Heber and Malchiel.

18 These are the sons of Zilpah, which Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and bare Jacob these sixteen souls.

19 The children of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph and Benjamin.

20 And unto Joseph were born in the land of Egypt Manasseh and Ephraim, which bare him Asnath the daughter of Potipherah the priest of On.

21 And the sons of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and Asbel, and Gera, and Naaman, and Ehi, and Ros, and Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

22 These are the sons of Rachel, which were born unto Jacob; all fourteen souls.

23 the children of Dan: Husim.

24 And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Sillem.

25 These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and bare Jacob the seven souls.

26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which were of his loins, (except the wives of his children,) were all together threescore and six souls.

27 And the sons of Joseph, which were born in Egypt, were two souls: so that all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.

28 And he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to instruct him to go to Goshen. And they came into the land of Goshen.

29 And Joseph harnessed his chariot, and went up to meet his father Israel at Goshen. And when he saw him, he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a long time.

30 And Israel said unto Joseph, I will gladly die now, after I have seen thy face, that thou art yet alive.

31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and to his father's house, I will go up, and tell Pharaoh, and say unto him: My brethren and my father's house are come unto me out of the land of Canaan.

32 And are pastors of cattle: for they are men that handle cattle: their cattle, both small and great, and all that they have, they have brought with them.

33 And when Pharaoh shall call you, and say, What is your meat?

34 And ye shall say, Thy servants are cattle-keepers from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers; that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen. For the shepherding of cattle is an abomination to the Egyptians.
