Majority Standard Bible

1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet about the Philistines before Pharaoh struck down Gaza.

2 This is what the LORD says: “See how the waters are rising from the north and becoming an overflowing torrent. They will overflow the land and its fullness, the cities and their inhabitants. The people will cry out, and all who dwell in the land will wail

3 at the sound of the galloping hooves of stallions, the rumbling of chariots, and the clatter of their wheels. The fathers will not turn back for their sons; their hands will hang limp.

4 For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every remaining ally. Indeed, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.

5 The people of Gaza will shave their heads in mourning; Ashkelon will be silenced. O remnant of their valley, how long will you gash yourself?

6 ‘Alas, O sword of the LORD, how long until you rest? Return to your sheath; cease and be still!’

7 How can it rest when the LORD has commanded it? He has appointed it against Ashkelon and the shore of its coastland.”

KJV

1 ¶ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.

2 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.

3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong [horses], at the rushing of his chariots, [and at] the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to [their] children for feebleness of hands;

4 Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, [and] to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.

5 Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off [with] the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?

6 O thou sword of the LORD, how long [will it be] ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.

7 How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

1545 Luther's English Bible (LED)

Prophecy against the Philistines, Tyre and Zidon.

1 This is the word of the LORD, which came unto Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before Pharaoh smote Gaza.

2 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, the waters come up from the north, which shall make a flood, and shall take away the land, and all that is therein, both the cities, and they that dwell therein; and the people shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.

3 For the tumult of their mighty horses that run, and for the rattling of their chariots, and the rumbling of their wheels, that the fathers shall not look for the children, because they shall be afraid.

4 Before the day that cometh to destroy all the Philistines, and to deliver up Tyre and Zidon, and all their helpers: For the LORD will destroy the Philistines, which are the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

5 Gaza shall be bald, and Ascalon and the remnant thereof shall be destroyed in their foundations. How long wilt thou cut thyself?

6 O sword of the LORD, when wilt thou cease? Enter thou into thy sheath, and rest, and be still.

7 But how canst thou cease, because the LORD hath commanded thee against Ascalon, and hath appointed thee against the fords of the sea?
