John 20

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she said, “and we do not know where they have put Him!”

3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out for the tomb.

4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

5 He bent down and looked in at the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

6 Simon Peter arrived just after him. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.

7 The cloth that had been around Jesus’ head was rolled up, lying separate from the linen cloths.

8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. And he saw and believed.

9 For they still did not understand from the Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.

10 Then the disciples returned to their homes.

11 But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb,

12 and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and the other at the feet.

13 “Woman, why are you weeping?” they asked. “Because they have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I do not know where they have put Him.”

14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she did not recognize that it was Jesus.

15 “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

17 “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples that she had seen the Lord. And she told them what He had said to her.

19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.

20 After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.”

22 When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”

24 Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.

31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

1 ¶ The first [day] of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

5 And he stooping down, [and looking in], saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

11 ¶ But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, [and looked] into the sepulchre,

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus saith unto her, ‹Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou?› She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

16 Jesus saith unto her, ‹Mary.› She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

17 Jesus saith unto her, ‹Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and› [to] ‹my God, and your God.›

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and [that] he had spoken these things unto her.

19 ¶ Then the same day at evening, being the first [day] of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, ‹Peace› [be] ‹unto you.›

20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them [his] hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

21 Then said Jesus to them again, ‹Peace› [be] ‹unto you: as› [my] ‹Father hath sent me, even so send I you.›

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on [them], and saith unto them, ‹Receive ye the Holy Ghost:›

23 ‹Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them;› [and] ‹whose soever› [sins] ‹ye retain, they are retained.›

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 ¶ And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: [then] came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, ‹Peace› [be] ‹unto you.›

27 Then saith he to Thomas, ‹Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust› [it] ‹into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.›

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

29 Jesus saith unto him, ‹Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed› [are] ‹they that have not seen, and› [yet] ‹have believed.›

30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

1 Now on the sabbath day Mary Magdalene came early, while it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and saw that the stone was removed from the sepulchre.

2 And she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

3 Then Peter and the other disciple went out, and came to the sepulchre.

4 And the two ran together, and the other disciple ran first, more quickly than Peter, and came first to the sepulchre,

5 And he looked in, and saw the lines laid: but he went not in.

6 Then Simon Peter came after him, and entered into the sepulchre, and saw the linen laid.

7 And the face-cloth, which was bound about Jesus' head, was not laid with the linen, but was wrapped up by itself in a special place.

8 And the other disciple also, which came first to the sepulchre, went in, and saw, and believed.

9 For they knew not yet the scripture, that he should rise from the dead.

10 Then the disciples went together again.

11 And Mary stood before the sepulchre weeping without. And as she wept, she looked into the sepulchre.

12 And behold, two angels in white robes sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, when they had laid the body of JESUS.

13 And they said unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? And she saith unto them, They have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had said this, she turned back, and saw JEsum standing, and knew not that it was JEsus.

15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest thou? She thinketh it is the gardener, and saith unto him, Lord, if thou hast carried him away, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will fetch him.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. Then she turned and said unto him, Rabbuni, that is, Master.

17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not: for I am not yet ascended unto my Father. But go thy way to my brothers and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and to your God. 18 Mary Magdalene cometh, and saith unto the disciples: I have seen the Lord, and these things he said unto me.

19 And it came to pass in the evening of the same sabbath, when the disciples were gathered together, and the doors were shut for fear of the Jews, that JEsus came and stood in the midst, and saith unto them: Peace be unto you.

20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, because they saw the Lord.

21 Then said JEsus unto them again: Peace be unto you. As the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, which is called the twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 Then said the other disciples unto him, We have seen the Lord. And he said unto them: Except I see in his hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the marks of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.

26 And again his disciples were there eight days, and Thomas with them. Then cometh Jesus, when the doors were shut, and entereth in the midst, and saith, Peace be unto you.

27 After this he saith unto Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

29 Jesus saith unto him, Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that see not, and yet believe.

30 And many other signs did JEsus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.

31 Now these things are written, that ye might believe that JEsus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life in his name].
