Joshua 10

1 Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king—and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.

2 So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly alarmed, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were mighty.

3 Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 “Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”

5 So the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped before Gibeon and made war against it.

6 Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the Amorites from the hill country have joined forces against us.”

7 So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of valor, came from Gilgal.

8 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have delivered them into your hand. Not one of them shall stand against you.”

9 After marching all night from Gilgal, Joshua caught them by surprise.

10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, pursued them along the ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

11 As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.

12 On the day that the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”

13 So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.”

14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.

15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

16 Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

17 And Joshua was informed: “The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”

18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.

19 But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.”

20 So Joshua and the Israelites continued to inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.

21 The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one dared to utter a word against the Israelites.

22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”

23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.

24 When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.

25 “Do not be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said. “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight.”

26 After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees and left them there until evening.

27 At sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.

28 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.

30 And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of Libnah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought against it.

32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.

33 At that time Horam king of Gezer went to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.

34 So Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and fought against it.

35 That day they captured Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction everyone in the city, just as he had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and fought against it.

37 They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at Eglon; he devoted to destruction Hebron and everyone in it.

38 Finally Joshua and all Israel with him turned toward Debir and fought against it.

39 And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to Hebron and as he had done to Libnah and its king.

40 So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.

41 Joshua conquered the area from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far as Gibeon.

42 And because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel, Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign.

43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

1 ¶ Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon [was] a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it [was] greater than Ai, and all the men thereof [were] mighty.

3 Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 ¶ So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, [and] went up from Gilgal all night.

10 And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, [and] were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: [they were] more which died with hailstones than [they] whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. [Is] not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

15 ¶ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

19 And stay ye not, [but] pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest [which] remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, [and] the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, [that] Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, [which remain] until this very day.

28 ¶ And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that [were] therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that [were] therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that [were] therein.

38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that [were] therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

40 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

1 And it came to pass, when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed them, and had done to Ai and her king, as he had done to Jericho and her king, and that they of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and had come among them,

2 They feared greatly (for Gibeon was a great city, as a royal city, and greater than Ai, and all the citizens thereof contentious).

3 And he sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piream king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying:

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for she hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 And the five kings of the Amorites came up in multitude, the king of Jerusalem, and the king of Hebron, and the king of Jarmuth, and the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, with all their camp, and occupied Gibeon, and fought against them.

6 And they that were in Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Turn not thy hand from thy servants. Come up to us in haste, save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 And Joshua went up from Gilgal, and all the people of war with him, and all the valiant men.

8 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand: there shall not any of them be able to stand before thee.

9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, for all night he went up from

10 But the LORD rebuked them before Israel, and they fought a great battle at Gibeon, and pursued after them by the way of Bethhoron, and smote them unto Azekah and Makkedah.

11 And as they fled before Israel by the way of Bethhoron, the LORD sent down great hail from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died. And many more died of the hail, than the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 And Joshua spake unto the LORD in the day that the LORD delivered up the Amorites in the sight of the children of Israel, and said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still in Gibeon; and moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun and the moon stood still , until the people had avenged themselves on their enemies. Is not this written in the book of the pious? And the sun stood in the midst of heaven, and went not down all that day.

14 And there was no day like unto it, before or since, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

15 And Joshua returned to the camp to Gilgal, and all Israel with him.

16 But the five kings had fled, and hid themselves in the cave of Makkedah.

17 And Joshua was told, We have found the five kings hid in the cave of Makkedah.

18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones before the hole of the cave, and appoint men over it to keep them.

19 But ye stand not still, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; and let them not enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished this very great battle upon them, and had smitten them, that the remnant of them that remained came into the strong cities.

21 So all the people returned into the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: and no man lifted up his tongue before the children of Israel.

22 And Joshua said, Open the hole of the cave, and bring forth the five kings unto me.

23 So they did, and brought the five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

24 And when the five kings were brought forth unto him, Joshua called unto all Israel, and said unto the captains of the people of war that went with him, Come near, and tread upon the necks of these kings with your feet. And they came near, and trod on their necks with their feet.

25 And Joshua said unto them: Fear not, nor be dismayed; be of good courage and undaunted: for so will the LORD do unto all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 And Joshua smote them afterward, and slew them, and hanged them upon five trees: and they hung upon the trees until the even.

27 And when the sun was down, he commanded that they should be taken down from the trees, and cast into the cave wherein they were hid: and they laid great stones before the cave hole. They are still there to this day.

28 That day Joshua also took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and burned it, and all the souls that were therein, and left none remaining: and he did unto the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

29 And Joshua and all Israel went with him from Makkedah to Libnah, and fought against them.

30 And the LORD delivered the same into the hand of Israel with their king, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, and left none remaining within: and he did unto their king as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 And afterward Joshua and all Israel went with him from Libnah to Lachish, and occupied and disputed with them.

32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and they took it the next day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 And at that time Horam king of Gezer went up to help Lachish: but Joshua smote him with all his people, until none remained within.

34 And Joshua went from Lachish, and all Israel, to Eglon, and besieged them, and fought against them.

35 And he took them the same day, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and destroyed all the souls that were therein the same day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 And Joshua and all Israel went up from Eglon to Hebron, and fought against them.

37 And he took them, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and their king, and all their cities, and all the souls that were therein; and left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon, and banished them, and all the souls that were therein.

38 And Joshua returned again with all Israel unto Debir, and fought against them.

39 And he took them, and their king, and all their cities, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein, and left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron, so did he to Debir and her king, and as he had done to Libnah and her king.

40 So Joshua smote all the country in the mountains, and in the south, and in the valleys, and by the rivers, with all the kings thereof: and he left none remaining, and hid all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

41 And he smote them from Kadeshbarnea unto Gaza, and all the land of Goshen unto Gibeon.

42 And he took all these kings with their land at one time: for the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 And Joshua returned into the camp to Gilgal with all Israel.
