Numbers 31

1 And the LORD said to Moses,

2 “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

3 So Moses told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and execute the LORD’s vengeance on them.

4 Send into battle a thousand men from each tribe of Israel.”

5 So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe of Israel—twelve thousand armed for war.

6 And Moses sent the thousand from each tribe into battle, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who took with him the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

7 Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

8 Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and their children, and they plundered all their herds, flocks, and goods.

10 Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,

11 and carried away all the plunder and spoils, both people and animals.

12 They brought the captives, spoils, and plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.

13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp.

14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who were returning from the battle.

15 “Have you spared all the women?” he asked them.

16 “Look, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to turn unfaithfully against the LORD at Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.

17 So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,

18 but spare for yourselves every girl who has never had relations with a man.

19 All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to purify both yourselves and your captives.

20 And purify every garment and leather good, everything made of goat’s hair, and every article of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:

22 Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—

23 everything that can withstand the fire—must be put through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must still be purified with the water of purification. And everything that cannot withstand the fire must pass through the water.

24 On the seventh day you are to wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”

25 The LORD said to Moses,

26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the congregation are to take a count of what was captured, both of man and beast.

27 Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to battle and the rest of the congregation.

28 Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, or sheep.

29 Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.

30 From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”

31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses,

32 and this plunder remained from the spoils the soldiers had taken: 675,000 sheep,

33 72,000 cattle,

34 61,000 donkeys,

35 and 32,000 women who had not slept with a man.

36 This was the half portion for those who had gone to war: 337,500 sheep,

37 including a tribute to the LORD of 675,

38 36,000 cattle, including a tribute to the LORD of 72,

39 30,500 donkeys, including a tribute to the LORD of 61,

40 and 16,000 people, including a tribute to the LORD of 32.

41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as an offering for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

42 From the Israelites’ half, which Moses had set apart from the men who had gone to war,

43 this half belonged to the congregation: 337,500 sheep,

44 36,000 cattle,

45 30,500 donkeys,

46 and 16,000 people.

47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.

48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses

49 and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.

50 So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”

51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold.

52 All the gold that the commanders of thousands and of hundreds presented as an offering to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels.

53 Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.

54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.

1 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.

3 And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the LORD of Midian.

4 Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.

5 So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of [every] tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of [every] tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.

7 ¶ And they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.

8 And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; [namely], Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

9 And the children of Israel took [all] the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.

10 And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.

11 And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, [both] of men and of beasts.

12 And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which [are] by Jordan [near] Jericho.

13 ¶ And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.

14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, [with] the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.

15 And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?

16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19 And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify [both] yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.

20 And purify all [your] raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats' [hair], and all things made of wood.

21 And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This [is] the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;

22 Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23 Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make [it] go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.

24 And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

25 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, [both] of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:

27 And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:

28 And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, [both] of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:

29 Take [it] of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, [for] an heave offering of the LORD.

30 And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.

31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

32 And the booty, [being] the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,

33 And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,

34 And threescore and one thousand asses,

35 And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.

36 And the half, [which was] the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:

37 And the LORD'S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.

38 And the beeves [were] thirty and six thousand; of which the LORD'S tribute [was] threescore and twelve.

39 And the asses [were] thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the LORD'S tribute [was] threescore and one.

40 And the persons [were] sixteen thousand; of which the LORD'S tribute [was] thirty and two persons.

41 And Moses gave the tribute, [which was] the LORD'S heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.

42 And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,

43 (Now the half [that pertained unto] the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand [and] seven thousand and five hundred sheep,

44 And thirty and six thousand beeves,

45 And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,

46 And sixteen thousand persons;)

47 Even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, [both] of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

48 ¶ And the officers which [were] over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:

49 And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which [are] under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.

50 We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.

51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, [even] all wrought jewels.

52 And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

53 ([For] the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)

54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, [for] a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

2 Avenge the children of Israel upon the Midianites, and afterward gather thyself unto thy people.

3 And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Prepare ye a host among you against the Midianites, to avenge the LORD upon the Midianites;

4 Out of every tribe a thousand, that ye may send into the army out of all the tribes of Israel.

5 And they took of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for an army.

6 And Moses sent them into the army with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the holy garments and the hall trumpets into his hand.

7 And they led the host against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses, and slew all the males.

8 And they slew the kings of Midian with their slain, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor also they slew with the sword.

9 And the children of Israel took captive the wives of the Midianites, and their children; all their cattle, and all their substance, and all their goods, did they spoil.

10 And burnt with fire all their cities of their habitation, and all their castles.

11 And they took all the spoil, and all that was to be taken, both men and cattle,

12 And they brought them unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, even the captives, and the cattle that were taken, and the spoil, unto the camp that is in the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan over against Jericho.

13 And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them before the camp.

14 And Moses was wroth with the captains of the host, which were captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which were of the host, and of the battle,

15 And said unto them: Why have ye let all the women live?

16 Behold, did not the children of Israel, by the counsel of Balaam, turn away to sin against the LORD above Peor, and a plague befell the congregation of the LORD?

17 Slay therefore all that are male among the children, and all the women which men have known, and which have been with them;

18 But every child that is a woman, and hath not known nor been with men, let him live unto you.

19 And ye shall lie down without the camp seven days, all ye that have slain, or touched them that were slain; and ye shall repent yourselves the third day, and the seventh day, with them that are taken captives.

20 And all garments, and all vessels of skins, and all furs, and all vessels of oil, shall ye uncover.

21 And Eleazar the priest said unto the people of war that were at war, This is the law which the LORD commanded Moses:

22 gold, silver, ore, iron, tin and lead

23 And all that suffereth fire ye shall pass through the fire, and purify it, that it may be purged with the water of separation. But all that suffereth not fire ye shall pass through water.

24 And ye shall wash your clothes the seventh day, and be clean: afterward ye shall come into the camp.

25 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

26 Take the sum of the spoil of the captives, both of men and cattle, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation,

27 And give half to them that went out to the army, and did the battle, and the other half to the congregation.

28 And thou shalt raise up unto the LORD of the men of war that are gone out to the army one soul every five hundred, both of men, and of oxen, and of asses, and of sheep.

29 Of their half shalt thou take, and give unto Eleazar the priest to heave unto the LORD.

30 And of the half of the children of Israel thou shalt take of every fifty a piece of goods, both of men, and of oxen, and of asses, and of sheep, and of all cattle, and shalt give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.

31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

32 And the rest of the spoil which the people of war had taken were six hundred and five and fifty thousand sheep,

33 Seventy-two thousand head of cattle,

34 Sixty-one thousand asses

35 And of the women that were not known to men, nor that were with them, thirty and two thousand souls.

36 And the half that belonged to them that went forth into the army were in number three hundred and thirty and seven thousand and five hundred sheep.

37 Of which there were unto the LORD six hundred and seventy and five sheep.

38 And there were thirty and six thousand oxen, of which seventy and two were given unto the LORD.

39 Item, thirty thousand and five hundred asses; of which one~ and sixty were given to the LORD.

40 Item, souls of men, sixteen thousand souls; of which thirty and two were given unto the LORD.

41 And Moses gave the heave of the LORD unto Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded him.

42 But the other half, which Moses allotted unto the children of Israel of the men of war

43 namely, half of the congregation in charge, was also three hundred times, and thirty and seven thousand five hundred sheep,

44 Thirty-six thousand head of cattle,

45 thirty thousand and five hundred asses

46 and sixteen thousand souls of men.

47 And Moses took of this half of the children of Israel a piece of fifty, both of cattle and of men, and gave them unto the Levites that kept the guard at the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

48 And the captains of thousands of the people of war, that is, of thousands and hundreds, came unto Moses.

49 And they said unto him, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war that were under our hands, and there lacketh not one.

50 Wherefore we bring unto the LORD gifts, every man's vessels of gold, chains, bracelets, rings, earrings, and clasps, that our souls may be reconciled unto the LORD.

51 And Moses took of them, and Eleazar the priest, the gold of all the vessels.

52 And all the gold that they brought unto the LORD was sixteen thousand and seven hundred and fifty shekels of the captains of thousands and hundreds.

53 For the men of war had spoiled every man for himself.

54 And Moses with Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation for a memorial of the children of Israel before the LORD.
