Numbers 5

1 Then the LORD said to Moses,

2 “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.

3 You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”

4 So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.

5 And the LORD said to Moses,

6 “Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by committing any sin against another, that person is guilty

7 and must confess the sin he has committed. He must make full restitution, add a fifth to its value, and give all this to the one he has wronged.

8 But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the LORD and must be given to the priest along with the ram of atonement, by which the atonement is made for him.

9 Every sacred contribution the Israelites bring to the priest shall belong to him.

10 Each man’s sacred gifts are his own, but whatever he gives to the priest will belong to the priest.”

11 Then the LORD said to Moses,

12 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them that if any man’s wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him

13 by sleeping with another man, and it is concealed from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),

14 and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not defiled herself—

15 then he is to bring his wife to the priest. He must also bring for her an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, an offering of memorial as a reminder of iniquity.

16 The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand before the LORD.

17 Then he is to take some holy water in a clay jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water.

18 After the priest has the woman stand before the LORD, he is to let down her hair and place in her hands the grain offering of memorial, which is the grain offering for jealousy. The priest is to hold the bitter water that brings a curse.

19 And he is to put the woman under oath and say to her, ‘If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become defiled while under your husband’s authority, may you be immune to this bitter water that brings a curse.

20 But if you have gone astray while under your husband’s authority and have defiled yourself and lain carnally with a man other than your husband’—

21 and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse—‘then may the LORD make you an attested curse among your people by making your thigh shrivel and your belly swell.

22 May this water that brings a curse enter your stomach and cause your belly to swell and your thigh to shrivel.’ Then the woman is to say, ‘Amen, Amen.’

23 And the priest shall write these curses on a scroll and wash them off into the bitter water.

24 He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and it will enter her and may cause her bitter suffering.

25 The priest shall take from her hand the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the LORD, and bring it to the altar.

26 Then the priest is to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar; after that he is to have the woman drink the water.

27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled herself and been unfaithful to her husband, then the water that brings a curse will enter her and cause bitter suffering; her belly will swell, her thigh will shrivel, and she will become accursed among her people.

28 But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, she will be unaffected and able to conceive children.

29 This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority,

30 or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.

31 The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”

1 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead:

3 Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.

4 And the children of Israel did so, and put them out without the camp: as the LORD spake unto Moses, so did the children of Israel.

5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

6 Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty;

7 Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth [part] thereof, and give [it] unto [him] against whom he hath trespassed.

8 But if the man have no kinsman to recompense the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed unto the LORD, [even] to the priest; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement shall be made for him.

9 And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring unto the priest, shall be his.

10 And every man's hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth the priest, it shall be his.

11 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

12 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him,

13 And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and [there be] no witness against her, neither she be taken [with the manner];

14 And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:

15 Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth [part] of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it [is] an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

16 And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD:

17 And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put [it] into the water:

18 And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which [is] the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:

19 And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness [with another] instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causeth the curse:

20 But if thou hast gone aside [to another] instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee beside thine husband:

21 Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell;

22 And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make [thy] belly to swell, and [thy] thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen.

23 And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot [them] out with the bitter water:

24 And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, [and become] bitter.

25 Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the offering before the LORD, and offer it upon the altar:

26 And the priest shall take an handful of the offering, [even] the memorial thereof, and burn [it] upon the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water.

27 And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, [that], if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, [and become] bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people.

28 And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.

29 This [is] the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside [to another] instead of her husband, and is defiled;

30 Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law.

31 Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity, and this woman shall bear her iniquity.

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

3 Both man and wife shall put them out of the camp, that they defile not their camps, where I dwell among them.

4 And the children of Israel did so, and brought them forth without the camp, as the LORD spake unto Moses.

5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

6 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: If a man or woman commit any sin against a man, and sin against the LORD, the soul hath iniquity upon it;

7 And they shall confess their sin which they have committed, and shall make reconciliation for their trespass with the principal sum, and shall add unto it the fifth part, and give it unto him for whom they trespassed.

8 And if there be none to whom it be paid, then it shall be given unto the LORD for the priest over the ram of atonement, to make an atonement for him.

9 Likewise shall all the heave of all that the children of Israel sanctify and offer unto the priest be.

10 And whoso sanctifieth any thing shall be his: and whoso giveth any thing to the priest shall be his:

10 Or if a man's zeal be kindled, and he be jealous for his wife, to set her before the LORD: and the priest shall do all things unto her according to this law.

11 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

12 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: If any man's wife shall go astray, and sin against him,

13 And if any man put her to sleep in the flesh, and it were hid from the man's eyes, and it were hid that she was defiled, he cannot persuade her, because she is not comprehended within,

14 And the spirit of jealousy kindleth him to be jealous for his wife, whether she be unclean, or whether she be not unclean:

15 Then he shall bring them unto the priest, and offer a sacrifice over them, the tenth of an ephah of barley flour; and he shall not pour oil upon it, neither put incense thereon. For it is a sacrifice of jealousy, and an offering for iniquity.

16 Then shall the priest bring them, and set them before the LORD,

17 And take the holy water in an earthen vessel, and put dust from the floor of the tabernacle into the water,

18 And he shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover her head, and put the trespass offering, which is a sacrifice of jealousy, upon her hand. And the priest shall have bitter accursed water in his hand;

19 And he shall adjure the woman, and say unto her, If no man have laid thee to sleep, and if thou hast not gone astray from thy husband, to defile thyself, these bitter cursed waters shall not hurt thee.

20 But where thou hast gone astray from thy husband, that thou art unclean, and any man hath slept with thee beside thy husband,

21 Then the priest shall adjure the woman with such a curse, and shall say unto her, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, that the LORD may make thy thigh to fail, and thy belly to swell.

22 Now therefore let the accursed water enter into thy womb, that thy belly may swell, and thy thigh faint. And the woman shall say, Amen, amen.

23 So the priest shall write these curses upon a piece of paper, and wash them away with bitter water;

24 And he shall give the woman to drink of the bitter accursed water. And when the accursed bitter water is gone into her,

25 And the priest shall take of their hand the jealousy offering, and shall wave it for a meat offering before the LORD, and offer it upon the altar, even it:

26 And he shall take an handful of the meat offering for her sin offering, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward he shall give the woman water to drink.

27 And when she hath drunk the water, if she be unclean, and have sinned against her husband, then the accursed water shall enter into her, and be bitter unto her, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fail: and the woman shall be a curse among her people.

28 But if such a woman be not defiled, but clean, it shall not hurt her to conceive.

29 This is the law of zeal, when a woman departeth from her husband, and is defiled,

31 And the man shall be innocent of iniquity: but the woman shall bear her iniquity.
