Psalms 51

1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet came to him after his adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me clean of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

4 Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and blameless when You judge.

5 Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

6 Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.

13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.

14 Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

18 In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, in whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

1 ¶ To the chief Musician, [A Psalm] of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, [and] be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 ¶ Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; [that] the bones [which] thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit.

13 [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14 ¶ Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: [and] my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

2 When Nathan the prophet came to him, when he was come to Bathsheba.

3 God, be merciful to me according to your goodness, and blot out my sins according to your great mercy!

4 Wash me well from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

5 For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.

6 In thee only have I sinned, and done evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified in thy words, and be pure when thou art judged.

7 Behold, I am begotten of sinful seed, and my mother conceived me in sins.

8 Behold, thou delightest in the truth that is in secret: thou hast made me to know the secret wisdom.

9 Defile me with hyssop, that I may be clean: wash me, that I may be white as snow.

10 Let me hear joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

11 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

12 Create in me, O God, a pure heart, and give me a new, conscientious spirit.

13 Cast me not away from thy presence, neither take thy Holy Spirit from me.

14 Comfort me again with thy help, and the joyful spirit contain me.

15 For I will teach the transgressors thy ways, that sinners may turn unto thee.

16 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, who art my God and Saviour, that my tongue may praise thy righteousness.

17 Open my lips, O LORD, that my mouth may declare thy glory.

18 For thou hast no pleasure in sacrifice; otherwise I would give it thee: and burnt offerings are not pleasing unto thee.

19 the sacrifices that please GOD are a troubled spirit; a troubled and bruised heart you, GOD, will not despise.

20 Do well unto Zion according to thy mercy: build the walls of Jerusalem.

21 Then shall the sacrifices of righteousness, the burnt offerings, and the whole sacrifices, be acceptable unto thee: then shall bullocks be offered upon thine altar.
