Luther’s “On the Councils and the Church” — How Christ Builds His People
Episode Description
Where is the true Church?
If councils fail, if popes contradict themselves, if pastors fall into sin, and if whole institutions collapse — how can Christians recognize where Christ’s people really are?
In this episode we explore Martin Luther’s nearly forgotten masterpiece, “On the Councils and the Church” (1539). Written near the end of his life, Luther asks a question that is just as urgent today as it was during the Reformation:
> The Church is not defined by power or popularity, but by Christ’s presence.
Luther answers by giving seven biblical marks of the Church—rooted in the Gospel, not human systems:
The pure preaching of the Word
Baptism
The Lord’s Supper
The Office of the Keys
Worship and the Catechism
Suffering and the Cross
Love for the weak
This episode reveals how Luther both honored the early councils and rejected the idolatry of human authority. Most importantly, we find comfort in the promise that Christ Himself builds His Church and will never abandon it.
✝ The Church is not ours to preserve. It is ours to receive.
