Disputation on the Mass.*)

Return to Volume 10

To be held next Friday 1520 (?).

1) The Mass does not make anyone holy and righteous, nor free from sins;

2 Therefore, it is not a sacrifice, but only a reminder of the true sacrifice of Christ,

3. for the practice of faith and the increase of truth.

There is no longer any sacrifice among Christians,

5. except for the one spiritual sacrifice by which we offer our bodies to God:

6. as a holy, living sacrifice pleasing to God.

7. this sacrifice is a shattered and

humiliated heart that does not obey evil desires.

This is the sacrifice of praise and righteousness that we must offer to God at all hours.

(9) Even a holy and righteous priest's mass cannot be useful to anyone else.

10) The prayers at Mass are for the benefit of all the faithful, whether the priest wants them or not.

(11) But a godless and sinful priest's mass, together with his prayers, is blasphemy and mortal sin.
