Ruth 4

1 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there. Soon the kinsman-redeemer of whom he had spoken came along, and Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.

2 Then Boaz took ten of the elders of the city and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.

3 And he said to the kinsman-redeemer, “Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.

4 I thought I should inform you that you may buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do so. But if you will not redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will redeem it,” he replied.

5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi and also from Ruth the Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”

6 The kinsman-redeemer replied, “I cannot redeem it myself, or I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption, because I cannot redeem it.”

7 Now in former times in Israel, concerning the redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his sandal and give it to the other party, and this was a confirmation in Israel.

8 So the kinsman-redeemer removed his sandal and said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.”

9 At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I am buying from Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.

10 Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses today.”

11 “We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in Bethlehem.

12 And may your house become like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring the LORD will give you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And when he had relations with her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.

14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel.

15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”

16 And Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and became a nurse to him.

17 The neighbor women said, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,

19 Hezron was the father of Ram, Ram was the father of Amminadab,

20 Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, Nahshon was the father of Salmon,

21 Salmon was the father of Boaz, Boaz was the father of Obed,

22 Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David.

1 ¶ Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.

3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which [was] our brother Elimelech's:

4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy [it] before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem [it], redeem [it]: but if thou wilt not redeem [it, then] tell me, that I may know: for [there is] none to redeem [it] beside thee; and I [am] after thee. And he said, I will redeem [it].

5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy [it] also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem [it] for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem [it].

7 Now this [was the manner] in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave [it] to his neighbour: and this [was] a testimony in Israel.

8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy [it] for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

9 ¶ And Boaz said unto the elders, and [unto] all the people, Ye [are] witnesses this day, that I have bought all that [was] Elimelech's, and all that [was] Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.

10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye [are] witnesses this day.

11 And all the people that [were] in the gate, and the elders, said, [We are] witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

13 ¶ So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.

14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed [be] the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.

15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of [thy] life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.

16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.

17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he [is] the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these [are] the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,

19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,

20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,

21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,

22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

1 And Boaz went up into the gate, and sat down there. And, behold, as the heir passed by, Boaz spake unto him, saying, Come and sit down hither or thither. And he came and sat down.

2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down. And they sat down.

3 And he said unto the heir: Naomi, which is come again from the land of Moab, offer for sale the piece of ground that was our brother's, Elimelech's.

4 Therefore I thought to bring it up in thine ears, saying, If thou wilt inherit it, buy it before the people, and before the elders of my people: but if thou wilt not inherit it, tell me, that I may know it: for there is no inheritance without thee, nor I after thee. And he said: I will inherit it.

5 And Boaz said, When thou buyest the field at the hand of Naomi, then thou shalt take Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up a name for the dead upon his inheritance.

6 And he said, I will not inherit it, lest peradventure I should destroy mine inheritance. Inherit thou that which I shall inherit: for I will not inherit it.

7 And it was a custom in Israel of old time, that, if any man would not inherit, nor buy, any possession, that there should be any thing, he should take off his shoe, and give it unto him: this was the testimony in Israel.

8 And the heir said unto Boaz, Buy thou it: and he took off his shoe.

9 And Boaz said unto the elders and to all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.

10 And Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon's wife, will I take to wife; that I may raise up a name for him that is dead upon his inheritance, and that his name be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place. And his name shall not be cut off from among his brethren, nor out of the gate of his place: ye are witnesses of this this day.

11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said: We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that cometh into thine house like Rachel and Leah, which built the house of Israel; and grow up very much in Ephrathah, and be glorified in Bethlehem.

12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this damsel.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And while he lay with her, the LORD gave her to be with child, and she bare a son.

14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not caused an heir to depart from thee at this time, that his name should remain in Israel.

15 He shall refresh thee, and keep thee in thy old age. For thy cord, which loved thee, bare him, which is better unto thee than seven sons.

16 And Naomi took the child, and laid him in her bosom, and became his keeper.

17 And their neighbours called his name, and said: Naomi is born a child; and they called his name Obed, which is the father of Jesse, which is David's father.

18 This is the family of Perez: Perez begat Hezron;

19 Hezron begat Ram; Ram begat Amminadab;

20 Amminadab begat Nahesson; Nahesson begat Salma;

21 Salma begat Boaz; Boaz begat Obed;

22 Obed begat Jesse; Jesse begat David.
